KIWIS FROM OWN GARDEN

Kiwi plant hardy?
The fact that the kiwi comes from far (China and New Zealand) already reveals that it is a heat lover. However, it can also hibernate in our garden. The condition is that you choose the right variety. Actinidia deliciosa ‘Jenny’, for example, can tolerate up to twelve degrees of frost, and according to some growers even minus eighteen. Even harder is the mini kiwi (Actinidia arguta), which tolerates up to minus thirty. The fruits are slightly smaller in size, but they are not inferior in taste to its big brother.

Choosing a location for the kiwi
A sunny, warm place out of the wind is ideal for the kiwi. Also important is the type of soil in which it stands, which should preferably be well-drained and rich in humus. In the autumn, sweep a good layer of branches and leaves around the base of the plant, so that the heat stays better in the soil. Because the plant wants to grow up, it is best to lead it along a wall or pergola. Note that it is a vigorous grower that produces a lot of tendrils in one season. Don’t be surprised if it grows into a big shrub!
